The University of Al Quaraouiyine in Fes, Morocco is the oldest, still operating, degree awarding university in the world.
In the beginning of the Islamic Golden Age, Fatima al-Fihri founded the University in 859 AD. It was an important milestone in the Muslim world and an enlightenment for the entire world.
Ibn kheldun praised her saying the following:
“It is as if she awoke the will power of the kings who proceeded her. And that is the bounty of Allah , which He gives to whom He wills from His pious servants.”
Many claims that Islam restricts women from pursuing education, but ironically it was a Muslim woman who taught the entire world what education is.
