Islamic emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) was the only state that recognized the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev, in addition to his high ranking status in the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, was also the head of the delegation that signed the agreement in Kandahar.
He says: “Afghanistan’s (Taliban government) recognition of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria has been the cause of great disturbance in the West. The reaction of Russia and western forces towards the reestablishment of official ties and friendly relations between two Muslim countries based on common interest and mutual understanding alone supports the supposition that Christian countries have a common strategy regarding the independence of Chechnya. Indeed this confirms our view about the common strategy of Russia and western forces against the Islamic world in general. This is visible through their straightforward enmity towards any relation that involves Islamic unity for a common cause”
