In the year 317 AH (930 AD), the Shia Qaraamitah – who are a heretical sect that follows Persian philosophy and believes that Zaradasht and Mazdak are prophets, attacked the Holy Mosque in Mecca, killed more than 30 thousand pilgrims, stole their money and looted the city.
They removed the door of the Holy Ka’bah as well as its cover, slaughtered those pilgrims who clung onto it, and dumped the corpses of the slain Muslims in the well of Zam-Zam. Furthermore, they removed the black stone and took it to their country.
Ibn Kathir describes the vicious incident saying:
“They entered al-Masjid al-Haraam and shed the blood of the pilgrims inside the Mosque around the Ka’bah, and they broke the Black Stone and removed it from its position, and took it with them to their homeland in 317 AH, and it stayed with them until 339 AH, so it was absent from its place in the Ka’bah for 22 years. To Allaah we belong and verily unto Him is our return.”
