On March 17, 2013, Mariam Farahat, popularly known as Umm Nidal or Khansa of Palestine, died at the age of 63 in Gaza city, Palestine.
Umm Nidal became known for her great sacrifices during Al-Aqsa Intifada. She attracted public attention after being filmed preparing her 17-year-old son, Muhammad Farhat, for his March 2002 operation against Israeli settlers, where he killed around 10 Israeli’s and injured around 23.
Her eldest son, Nidal, was killed in February 2003 by the Israeli intelligence, Mossad. A third son, Rawad, died in 2005 in an Israeli airstrike on his car in Gaza city. And her son Wesam served 11 years in the Israeli prison and was released in 2005.
In a 2005 interview, Umm Nidal said:
“I prepared all my sons for Jihad for the sake of Allah, whether by carrying out an attack or by any other form of Jihad. I prepared myself for this. He who chooses a difficult path, must be ready to bear the consequences.”
